Impressionism (1865–1885)

About the time

The Industrial Revolution is still happening and society is thriving in France.

The Art

Most of the Impressionists are French and they began painting less realistically in response to realism.  Impressionism is marked by painters painting outside in direct sunlight and using dots, slashes and dabs of color that is not blended into the colors around it.  They were also interested in changing light, the weather and reflections on water.  Like realists they were interested in casual glances at ordinary life but they painted those subjects in an individual way.

Materials

The paintings are oil on canvas.

Monet- (Mo-nay) "Impression Sunrise" was the painting that inspired people to call this movement "Impressionism."

"Olympia"

"A Bar at the Folies-Bergere"  1882 Notice that there is a mirror behind the bar-tender.  In the mirror you can see the reflection of her back, the rest of the bar with many people, a chandelier and a woman's legs with green boots.  You can also see the man that she is talking to and that the viewer's perspective is really his perspective.

"Luncheon on the grass"
